Warning! Must read regarding GNC Ultra Mega Women's Vitamin without iron or iodine!!
On October 12, 2007, D. Bliss posted a comment on a post entry I originally wrote on Aug 20, 2007 regarding GNC's Ultra Mega Women's Vitamin without iron/iodine. She included a link to a site that listed the side effects of consuming too little or too much of specific vitamins. I felt compelled to repeat my reply here to make it easy to find the information in two places on my blog, in case you miss my comments.
I summarize below the effects high levels of some of the supplements in the Women's Ultra Mega Vitamin w/o Iron or Iodine may have. I included the ones that have a very high % recommended daily value, and many of those symptoms that overlap with hyperthyroidism. Here's a short summary:
Ultra Mega Vitamin contains:
5333% Vitamin B1--High levels can cause heart palpitations, and more.
4706% Vitamin B2--Hi levels can cause fatigue and more.
4000% Vitamin B6--Hi levels can cause depression, severe fatigue, low blood sugar, mood swings, HYPERTHYROID, heart palpitations, muscle spasms, osteoporosis, restlessness and more.
1333% Vitamin B12--High levels can cause panic-anxiety attacks, heart palpitations, HYPERTHYROID, and more.
800% Pantothenic Acid--High levels can cause depression, severe fatigue and more.
So for those of you who've been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism or Graves' Disease, do any of the above symptoms sound like anything you've experienced?
Bottom line, this is not a vitamin for me. If anyone knows of a better source for a daily vitamin that doesn't include such extreme daily allowances yet contains no iodine, please post here and let everyone know.
Thanks D. Bliss for the link--it proved very valuable in assessing potential harmful side effects of taking the GNC vitamin.
