If you read my last post, you know that I attended the patient & family Graves' Disease forum at the Kellogg Eye Center, University of Michigan, last Saturday morning. So many people ask me here on my blog, or through direct emails, "how long did you have Graves' Disease before you noticed eye problems." I learned something Saturday that is relevant to that question, and that I'd like to share with you here.
According to Dr. Cesar Briceno, MD, in 70-85% of Graves' patients, the eye disease will develop within 18months. For me it was early.
He went on to say that surgical treatment is generally not done (unless necessary) early on, but rather is considered later, when the "active phase" of Graves' Eye Disease has ended. Meaning your eyes are stable, no longer moving, over a period of time.
I thought that was interesting and informative. And I thought I would post the information here because I get asked that question so very often.
