As I approach the 10-year anniversary of this blog, looking back, I could not have imagined then that a treatment would be developed to reverse the eye symptoms of Graves' Disease. And yet, here we are today, with a breakthrough drug that does just that. I'm so proud of Dr. Terry Smith, M.D., and Dr. Raymond Douglas, M.D., Ph.D., who have worked tirelessly together to study and research this insidious autoimmune disease. I came to know them as a patient of a different doctor at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center. That a drug may have the same effect as would otherwise require surgery is a major breakthrough.
Although I was one of the few "fortunate" ones whose eye symptoms resolved on their own, the majority of patients are not so lucky. Often, patients require surgery to correct disfigurement. With another trial underway, and results expected next year, now, more than ever, Thyroid eye Disease patients have hope like never before. For more information, click here:
