I have some very exciting news to share with you!
Last month, Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle (NY-25) introduced legislation to increase awareness and education about autoimmune diseases. Click here to read the entire bill H.R. 6218.
One very exciting aspect of this bill includes the goal of developing a health care professionals curriculum. Why is that important? How many of you had to visit multiple doctors to obtain a proper diagnosis? Likely many of you. On average, for most autoimmune disease patients it takes about four doctors in about 3-5 years to get a proper diagnosis. Imagine a world where that time is dramatically shortened. Where treatment begins sooner. That's exciting! And sorely needed as there are 50 million people in the U.S. alone who suffer from an autoimmune disease. And that number is growing rapidly.
Would you like to help support this bill by meeting with your representative? Read on to learn how.
As you know, I'm proud to be a Board Member of AARDA, a national non-profit organization dedicated to bringing a national focus to autoimmune disease. AARDA can help make arrangements for you to visit your local representative's office in support of this bill. How is that? . . . here is what AARDA wrote on their Facebook page.
AARDA will arrange the appointment for you and supply you with supporting materials. We are depending on you to keep the appointment and eloquently speak about how this bill will work in favor of over 50 million people. If you are interested, please email Advocacy@aarda.org with your name, zip code and autoimmune disease (if any) that has affected you or your family. Also, please include the available times that you are able to visit your home office. Thank you in advance.
This is a great opportunity to advocate with your elected officials in support of this important legislation. Having walked the halls of Congress earlier this year, I can say that making visits with key leaders of AARDA was an experience I will never forget. There is no experience quite like it. It's especially meaningful because for many of you, like me, we have something highly personal at stake: our own health issues as a direct consequence of being affected by autoimmune disease(s). The same goes for Rep. Buerkle. Her late sister began experiencing symptoms of MS when she was just 12 years old. My heart breaks thinking about it.
I'd like to personally express my thanks to Rep. Buerkle for playing a key role in introducing this Bill.
Please show your support and remember to email AARDA at Advocacy@aarda.org if you'd like to get personally involved. I sure hope you do.
